MONROVIA, May 20 (LINA) – The Chairman at the Liberia Small Arms Commission has disclosed that the Government of Liberia lacks accurate statistics on circulated weapons across the country.
Commissioner James Fromayan admitted that the unregulated proliferation of weapons among civilians remains a challenge in the country.
According to commissioner Fromayan, immense efforts are currently being made to enforce the President’s Executive Order 141 aimed at regulating arms across Liberia.
He made the disclosure recently in Monrovia when he addressed the Ministry of Information regular press briefing.
Commission Fromayan said the Government of Liberia has launched a timely strategy that will provide an amnesty period for the registration and legalization of weapons that are in the country.
According to him, about 95 percent of arms in the country were illegally purchased with no proper regulation.
He noted that beginning February of 2026, all Liberians will be subjected to arms regulation or face a ten-year imprisonment.
The Commission maintained that a technical Committee, comprising of a team of security experts from the Liberia National Police, National Security Agency, Liberia Immigration Service, Armed Forces of Liberia and Justice Ministry, pursuant to section 4.6 of the amended Firearms and Ammunition control act of 2015, will vet arms carriers for the possession of license, and the formulation of adopted administrative regulation of arms in the country.
