BARCLAYVILLE, May 20 (LINA) – Grand Kru County Health Officer has emphasized the vital role that nurses play in delivering quality healthcare services across the county.
Speaking during the National Nurses Day celebration held in Barclayville on May 16, 2025, Dr. Learwellie Craig commended the resilience and dedication of the county’s nurses, amid the significant challenges facing the healthcare sector in Grand Kru County.
He called on national stakeholders to provide increased support for the welfare of nurses and other health professionals throughout the country.
He highlighted that such support would not only motivate healthcare workers but also address critical issues such as salary increments, which are essential for retaining professionals in the sector.
The Grand Kru County Health Administrator pointed out that many health professionals are hesitant to accept assignments in remote areas due to inadequate salaries and the lack of basic social services.
As part of the measures to combat the nightmare, Dr. Craig urged the Ministry of Health to prioritize capacity building for healthcare practitioners in the use of modern medical equipment, alongside securing financial support, adequate resources, and improved living conditions for those working in rural communities.
Expressing concern over the ongoing challenges faced by nurses, including limited training opportunities and poor living conditions, Dr. Craig announced that the County Health Team is actively working to engage relevant authorities to advocate salary increment and enhanced training for all health workers.
He also appealed to the county authorities and the legislative caucus to support the establishment of a nursing education program at Grand Kru Technical College.
Dr. Craig believes that such an initiative would strengthen the county’s healthcare system by creating a more competent and well-educated nursing workforce.
The celebration, held at the Grand Kru County Health Team Conference Room, brought together nurses, senior health workers, health partners, youth and women’s groups, traditional leaders, and representatives from the Liberia National Police.
Many attendees expressed their heartfelt appreciation for the contributions of nurses and encouraged them to remain steadfast in their commitment to their profession, assuring them that their sacrifices will not go unrecognized.
