GOL Breaks Ground For Sinoe Coastal Defense Project

MONROVIA, May 20 (LINA) – The Government of Liberia, through the Environment Protection Agency (EPA), and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Liberia office, has broken grounds to begin the construction works for the coastal defense project in Sinoe County.

According to a release from the UNDP office in Liberia dated May 17, 2025, the project “Enhancing the Resilience of Vulnerable Coastal Communities in Sinoe County is an ambitious US$8.9 million grant initiative funded by the Global Environment Facility.

According to the release, the Sinoe Coastal Resilience Project aims to address the mounting threat of coastal erosion caused by climate change.

It is implemented by the EPA under the UNDP Liberia Energy & Environment Program Inclusive Green Growth Portfolio, which seeks to protect vulnerable communities through hybrid adaptation infrastructure like coastal revetments, resilient livelihoods, and improved access to climate information.

The groundbreaking ceremony held in Greenville Friday, May 17, 2025, brought together key national and local stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Public Works, Mines and Energy, Agriculture, Internal Affairs, including the Sinoe Legislative Caucus, traditional leaders, alongside community residents.
