MONROVIA, (LINA) – As Liberia celebrates a historic and diplomatic victory after securing a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term, Liberia’s Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti has been widely praised for her tireless leadership and strategic diplomatic role she played that led to the country’s ascendency to the post.
In an interview on state radio on Wednesday June 4, 2025, the ECOWAS Ambassador to Liberia Josephine Nkrumah described the occasion as a joyful and proud moment for the entire subregion and singled out Minister Nyanti as the architect of Liberia’s global reawakening.
This is not just a victory for Liberia; it is a triumph for West Africa, the Ambassador said, citing, “and much of the credit belongs to Foreign Minister Nyanti, whose leadership, determination, and vision guided Liberia through a competitive and complex campaign”.
The Ambassador noted that while Liberia’s campaign for the seat began during the administration of former President George Weah, it gained significant momentum under President Joseph Boakai with Foreign Minister Nyanti spearheading a more coordinated and impactful diplomatic strategy.
The ECOWAS Envoy stated that Minister Nyanti translated President Boakai’s vision of re-establishing Liberia’s global standing into tangible results.
“She traveled, engaged, negotiated, and delivered a message of substance, one that resonated across Africa and beyond,” she said.
The ECOWAS Diplomat emphasized that Liberia’s campaign focused on themes such as multilateralism, women and youth in peace and security, democratic governance, and international cooperation.
According to the ECOWAS Ambassador, these priorities aligned with both regional and global concerns, strengthening Liberia’s appeal among member states of the United Nations.
“The campaign wasn’t just about winning a seat; it was about showing the world that Liberia is ready to lead, to contribute, and to be a voice of peace, inclusion, and development”, Amb. Nkrumah said.
Ambassador Nkrumah also acknowledged the critical support Liberia received from ECOWAS and the African Union, saying the endorsement of the regional blocs was a strong show of solidarity and a vote of confidence in Liberia’s leadership.
“This was an ECOWAS campaign as much as it was Liberia’s. The 15-member states saw their collective interest reflected in Liberia’s message,” she noted.
With Liberia preparing to take up its seat in January 2026, expectations are high that the country will play a constructive and influential role on the Council.
The ECOWAS Ambassador expressed confidence that under Minister Nyanti’s continued guidance, Liberia would uphold its campaign promises and help shape key international decisions.
“The world is watching not just because Liberia now sits at the table, but because of the powerful and principled campaign that brought it there,” the Ambassador noted.
She opined that Minister Nyanti has set the bar high, as she expressed optimism that the Liberian Foreign Minister will continue to elevate Liberia’s role in global diplomacy.
As congratulations pour in from across the continent, many observers see this as a defining moment for Liberia’s foreign policy and a milestone achievement for the Government and people of Liberia.
