MONROVIA, May 20 (LINA) – Liberia’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary-Designate to South Africa, George S. W. Pattern has pledged to strengthen bilateral relations between the Republic of Liberia and the Republic of South Africa, promising a revitalized partnership grounded in mutual respect and shared continental goals.
Appearing before the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs on Monday, May 19, 2025, for his confirmation hearing, Ambassador-Designate Pattern outlined his vision for fostering a “robust and mutually rewarding partnership” that will harness both nations’ shared values and historic bonds.
“I come to this portfolio with a wealth of experience gained over the years navigating normal, complex, and challenging diplomatic situations on behalf of Liberia,” he stated, emphasizing his readiness to deepen cooperation between the two nations.
Highlighting the long-standing ties between Liberia and South Africa, Ambassador Pattern recalled the solidarity shown during South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle, noting Liberia’s support for freedom fighters and its historic role in hosting leader like Nelson Mandela.
“The relationship between our countries dates back to the late 1950s and early 1960s,” he noted. “It is a bond founded on Pan-African solidarity, the pursuit of freedom, democratic governance, and social justice.”
The Ambassador-Designate stressed the importance of leveraging South Africa’s economic and technological strength alongside Liberia’s abundant natural resources to foster development across critical sectors.
“South Africa has the largest economy on the continent, supported by a strong technological foundation and a diversified economic base,” he said. “Liberia, on the other hand, is rich in natural resources that must be developed to improve the lives of our people.”
Pattern outlined key areas for enhanced collaboration, including agriculture, economic development, health, educational exchanges, cultural initiatives, tourism, and peace and security.
In alignment with President Joseph Boakai’s ARREST agenda, he pledged to work diligently under the guidance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to expand bilateral cooperation and increase trade and investment between the two countries.
“Finally, I am honored to assume the critical task of being Liberia’s representative to South Africa,” Ambassador Pattern cited, saying, “with your confirmation and support, I am confident we can achieve extraordinary milestones and build a brighter future for both nations.”
