MONROVIA, May 20 (LINA) – The Liberian Coast Guard has joined naval forces from over 30 nations in Obangame Express 2025, a major multinational maritime exercise aimed at strengthening regional security across the Gulf of Guinea and the wider Atlantic Ocean.

Obangame Express is the largest coordinated maritime security operation in West and Central Africa.

Led by the U.S. Sixth Fleet and supported by the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), the two-week exercise focuses on improving international naval cooperation, enhancing operational readiness, and tackling common maritime threats.

According to a statement posted on the official U.S. Embassy Facebook page on Monday, May 19, 2025, this year’s exercise features more than 30 ships and multiple aircraft conducting complex joint operations.

These include piracy interdiction, countering illegal fishing, protection of offshore oil infrastructure, and search-and-rescue drills.

The Liberian Coast Guard received intensive training during the exercise, which also involved collaboration with naval units from Italy and Côte d’Ivoire operating in Liberian waters.

At the same time, the Ghana Navy hosted one of the 21 Maritime Operations Centers (MOCs) supporting the initiative, allowing for real-time coordination and operational control.

U.S. Navy observers worked alongside Liberian personnel during the exercise, offering guidance and technical support to further strengthen Liberia’s maritime capacity.

The name Obangame—derived from the Fang language, meaning “togetherness”—captures the spirit of the operation: unity through partnership. Organizers emphasized that this spirit is key to safeguarding vital sea lanes and protecting coastal communities from security threats that transcend borders.

Liberian officials were praised for the country’s continued commitment to regional security. Observers noted that Liberia’s active participation reflects its growing capacity and willingness to contribute meaningfully to multinational defense efforts.
