MONROVIA, May 20 (LINA) – In a significant recognition of Liberia’s growing role in regional football, the West African Football Union (WAFU) has appointed Aletha Massaqoui, Acting Manager of Women’s Football at the Liberia Football Association (LFA), to serve on the Technical Study Group (TSG) for the upcoming 2025 WAFU Zone A Women’s Cup.
The announcement was made through a press statement issued by the LFA on Monday, May 19, 2025.
Massaqoui joins a select group of football technocrats who will be tasked with analyzing team performances, technical trends, and providing strategic insights throughout the tournament.
This appointment underscores Liberia’s increasing influence in regional women’s football and reflects confidence in Massaqoui’s technical acumen and leadership in the sport.
Meanwhile, the third edition of the WAFU Zone A Women’s Cup, originally scheduled to begin on May 18, according to the release has been postponed and will now kick off on Thursday, May 22, 2025, in Nouakchott, Mauritania. The competition brings together women’s national teams from West Africa’s Zone A and is organized by WAFU to promote and elevate women’s football in the region.
The release also noted that Liberia’s Women’s National Team, led by head coach Salem Kebede, has departed for Mauritania to participate in the tournament, stating that the team will open its campaign against Guinea-Bissau on Thursday.
Liberia has been drawn into Group A, alongside host nation Mauritania, Guinea-Bissau, and Mali.
This year’s tournament marks a continued effort by WAFU to strengthen women’s football in the sub-region. The inaugural edition was held in 2020 following a postponement from 2019.
